Hmm. Same with my mum. But my work involves a lot of working with spreadsheets, documents, and research in the browser at the same time. And the occasional bit of database work. That works best with 2 monitors and a mechanical keyboard.

Anyway, the office doesn't have the budget to buy me any gadgets…

I really want an iPad Pro because it's a beautiful, massive slab with a wonderful screen. But iOS/iPad OS just doesn't work for me at the moment — far too primitive compared to MacOS — and I wonder if it's paradigm will ever be something I can adopt (never mind embrace). I don't like sandboxing, the idea that anyone can control what I can/can't install (which, to be fair, even Catalina attempts to implement), and the primitive nature of this overly graphical, WYSIWYG, one-inout-per-action computing model (no batch renaming files, weak automation…).

In fact I suspect the only thing I'd use it for is reading: the Kindle is wonderful unless you're reading foreign-language books and using the dictionary every minute.

Because a jetlagged computer just doesn't work as well.

The story behind the name is that, when receiving their daily ration of alcohol, sailors would pour a bit onto some gunpowder and try to light it. If it didn't light up, they'd know someone had diluted their ration.

I think it takes 100 proof (50% ABV) to light up. Generally "navy strength" bottlings are 50–60% ABV; tonight's is Four Pillars, which I think is 54%.

Dry martini with navy-strength gin, free-poured into a wine glass. Before I found out we'd run of ice.

My measurements are definitely all off and it'll only get worse on the second drink.

The saxophone is without doubt the biggest musical challenge I've taken on in about 20 years. Completely different paradigm to what I'm used to (i.e. strings) and my face muscles just aren't up to it at all — complete exhaustion after only 15 minutes on a pretty average reed.

Shisha, cigar, and wine to bring in the new year. Woke up rather late this morning.

Big protest day — a day of vandalism again, for some…no surprise — so took the whole afternoon to go through all my finances. That took a little longer than expected.
