Update on the possible scammer last night (translated, this all happened in French):

Me (last night): Thanks for your time and help, but recent events have changed my situation and I have decided not to buy the watch for now.
> Him (today (Sunday) morning, 9am): Thank you for the update. I would also like to remind you that [in addition to bank transfers] we also accept payment by credit card.

There's just something about that reminder that made me a bit uncomfortable. Or am I reading too much into it?

Sod it anyway, the authorised Glycine dealer in Paris has almost the same prices and…is listed on Glycine's site as an authorised dealer. Should be much safer. Curious, though, that this guy is also clearly on his phone all day long — have never had anyone in France reply to emails within 2 minutes on a Sunday. They must get one hell of a commission.

Oh I love good clothes. JCrew's Irish linen shirts are my favourite. But they just pair with chinos/jeans and black shoes, nothing fancy.

But a suit would actually fit my lifestyle quite well — just wear more or less the same thing every day. That said, I have 2 issues with suits: ties are dangerous (the only 2 I have are clip-on) and pointless, and wearing even an unstructured linen jacket is silly in late spring/summer.

@height8 Sounds very much like Paris :o

Because I'm very concerned about having freshly roasted beans.

Heh, I've never owned a suit. Have a few sports jackets and trousers, and I only wear dark blue/black (shirts, jackets, socks, shoes, watches), so I don't think many people have noticed…

It sucks that, as I get to the end of a bag of coffee, I have to start rationing. Lest I run out of coffee before I can get my hands on another bag.

@height8 Spring still not quite arrived then?

@height8 More importantly, how was dinner?

Yeah, I just sent the vaguest possible email saying that "after numerous recent events, I have decided not to make the purchase for now, thank you for your time and help".

Tried to be nice and all since I can't be 100% sure that they're a scam operation…but it just doesn't add up. Especially not with a .org and .ch site that both contain no more than an order form.

Ah well, back to hunting. Might try some forums this time…

This seller who I wanted to buy a Swiss watch from…it's all too suspicious.

  • The photo of the watch they had on Chrono24 was the model I wanted. Said I wanted it and asked about payment etc., and then they said the manufacturer wasn't making it anymore. So why did they have a false listing? The guy's story kept changing as well. First, it was "Yes, we sell both variations of the watch", then it was "Can you confirm which model exactly you want?" (despite my sending the first email as a "question about this listing"), then "Sorry, that model isn't made anymore."
  • They list on Chrono24 but do the transaction on their own system.
  • The email is clients at bestswisswatches.ch, but their SSL certificate is only valid for .org.
  • A luxury watch company based in Lausanne whose rep replies Sunday dinnertime within minutes?
  • They said that if I paid by bank transfer, I'd get 3% off (because there'd be no CC fees etc.), but said it would be enough to put my name and a mention of the watch brand (not even the exact model) in the transfer notes. Didn't offer a reference number or any sort of traceability.
  • The straw: I can only find this seller/company mentioned on two forum threads. One never reached a conclusion, the other's OP concluded that he got scammed.
