@peemee How did the loss happen? Which device?
@matigo Apparently the image hashes are only compared to a database of known problematic material; my worry is that having a centralised database of generally-agreed-to-be-problematic material with this automatic comparison which apparently has no opt-out is just asking for a massive security breach and, in some jurisdictions, a huge crackdown on freedom of speech (all that's needed is to insert a few extra records into the database).
@matigo Well apparently it has been common server-side for some time, which I do understand; my issue is that an on-device implementation is too easily expanded to scan content that I don't intend to upload and which is therefore no one else's business.
I was excited for iOS 15's expansion of DND to Personal/Work profiles until this news about Apple implementing on-device scanning of photos [news.ycombinator.com].
Maybe this is my cue to get out of the iOS ecosystem.
@matigo Heh, thanks. For the most part, my own interactions with police here have been alright and I've been lucky. The bad apples are probably fewer than what most (including me) suspect, but unfortunately it only takes one to destroy trust in the entire institution.
Randomly stopped by two police officers today who wanted to know what I was doing in the area. I'm not confident enough with Cantonese to use it in such circumstances, so I only spoke in English; they refused to reciprocate. (English proficiency is a requirement to join the police force here.)
Yet the moment I started writing their numbers down in my little notebook (Moleskine, no less) all those hours of English class came flooding back to them — I guess we're all motivated by different things.
The entire affair was conducted calmly with indoor voices despite our being outdoors, which does reflect rather well on them.
Mac Pro upgrade went swimmingly. Rather amazed that the bash script I wrote to do all the Homebrew installations, dotfile symlinks, zsh setup, and everything else went so well — rare for an untested script to do anything at all.
Now with a 2TB SSD and 64GB RAM I feel quite comfortable even on this 8 year old machine.
Shame I got around to it too late: Team Fortress 2 no longer runs on MacOS.
New keyboard tray installed. Just a clamp-on one to keep me going until the next renovation. Can't quite figure out why I waited so many years to replace the old one. Posture much improved. Absolutely wonderful with the Ergodox Infinity (split keyboard).
@matigo It's been many years since I last did anything significant to my main machine. One thing I haven't done over the years is maintained a file to track all those little hidden preferences that I've toggled here and there.
It'll be nice to start afresh in any case.
