The increasing flatness and colour dullness of each version of Mac and Windows OS since the latter half of the 2000s (from the Vista/Leopard era) has, for me, correlated with a general decrease in the feel of "magic" looking at a computer.

Windows XP was bright and optimistic; Aqua was a breath of fresh air; both sides came from dull grey UIs. 20 years on, it feels like we've returned to the greyness of the 1990s.

Perhaps in 2021, to mark 20 years, we could have some developments on the desktop side that justify a return to a more optimistic UI, that make me (us?) feel the "magic" again.

Or maybe this is just a more general nostalgia.

Congrats!

of course!

Admittedly storage is a concern. I have taken over half of the office wine fridge (which we are keeping), the entirety of the space under my office desk, probably close to a hundred bottles (I've lost count) in company storage, and another 100–120 bottles at home.

The biggest issue is just making sure I drink the wines at their peak stage. It may be time to look at cellar tracking apps.

I'm about to give up my desk at the office. After the company downsizing, I've been moved from the biggest desk to a titchy one in the corner, so I agreed with my boss that I'd be working from home permanently from now on — he admits that even from looking at the seating plan (he's not based in HK) he could tell it wasn't a great arrangement.

All that's left at my desk are a few books, a spare shirt, and 2 cases of wine.

So this virus has done me a favour, to the extent that I stay with this company.

I can imagine having a “touch mode” and a “desktop mode”. The existing full screen function of the green button, and the very primitive tiling, is already a significant departure from the desktop UI experience of the last 20 years towards the iOS style.

Less about that, more about making the iPad something to consider as a serious contender for a daily driver.

I’m sure we all remember the G3 with its carrying handle. They knew what we wanted even in the CRT days.

Imagine: a 12.9" iPad Pro with the current hardware but 1 more USB C port (to be on the opposite side, making a symmetric design) — running an updated MacOS that supported touch, Pencil, virtual keyboard, etc.

I'd buy that without a second thought.

I read this morning (Reuters?) that Shake Shack returned their USD 10m.

Well, in some culture, I'm sure that's considered a compliment.

Note the intentional singular.
