EK43 espressos are slowly catching on in Paris. Good news.

Installing a panel of LEDs so they shine outward toward the platform instead of onto the floor…

…is exactly what the RATP has done. Genius.

Well a couple — as in single digits — of LEDs have been installed even though the word doesn't yet exist in the language, and an additional patina of piss has come about in a few stations, but other than that no, it's still a city of buildings so old electricity was retrofitted, elevators a luxury, and neighbours' annoyingly audible noise a lifestyle.

Happily they have been in HK for over a decade now.

Paris claims it's renovating its stations, but it's been 4 years and there's been virtually no improvement. Still no escalators in the majority of stations, still as dirty, still no safer. Downtime is still as bad as ever.

Damn. Never easy to say goodbye.

It would be easier and less painful to install safety barriers at every station. At the moment only 2 (of 20(?)) lines have them.

That would mean a friend were still alive.

Paris, day 2: Stuck in a powerless metro, about to be late for lunch, apparently because someone's on the tracks.

Third wave coffee in France is so weird, linguistically.

Only country I've seen long black and allongé interpreted as "potential synonyms" (because the concept of a long black isn't in popular culture yet, even though the baristas know exactly what the difference is), and long black as potentially referring to a pourover but also to the americano's sibling.

Still, the quality is there, so I can put up with it.

Went for one cocktail after dinner.

Got talking to the bartender who's going to HK in May and wanted a few places to go to.

Gave him a pretty full list of bars.

Ended up having a shot of mezcal with some others who were leaving, and everyone behind the bar.

Heh.

Right behind the bar is always the best place to be when alone.

Having dinner near where the old apartment is. Dropped by to see the bar owner and her dog.

Both recognised me, surprisingly, and the dog was uncontrollably happy to see me again.

As was I…even if it was unfortunately just for 15 minutes.
