Having an interesting debate with a friend (who's dragging his 3-yearr LLB to upwards of 5 years, incidentally) about whether my approach or his is better in the long run:
My approach: do a soft subject (linguistics), and wine on the side, then go into the F&B industry (hopefully), enjoy my job, start off earning not an awful lot but work my way up.
His approach: do a law degree because "it pays well and a degree is an investment", drag it on infinitely because he doesn't want to get a job (even though "it pays well"), accept being miserable at the day job but enjoy having "loads of money" to blow on having fun (on the one week's paid leave he'll get every year?)
Sometimes I do have doubts about my decision to do linguistics though, even with the wine qualification on the side. Looking at (happier and more successful) friends who've all gone into finance in some capacity, I wonder if I should've done the same — but I brought it up with them over Christmas and they all insisted that I would end up alright. Strangely, my parents don't have an opinion, even though mum's worked in HR/headhunting for well over 20 years now, except to insist that the university's reputation is of the utmost importance.
Huh.
